1990 Foundation - Environmental Technology
UIT establishes a successful business development in environmental technology in cooperation with Dresdner Grundwasserforschungszentrum e. V. (DGFZ) and its affiliates, focusing on field technique for in-situ measurement and sampling in groundwater and soil as well as laboratory facilities for environmental research.
Since 1993 Uranium Mine and Mill Site Remediation
UIT starts to develop remediation concepts for uranium mine and mill sites of Wismut GmbH in Saxony and Thuringia. In 1995 – 2002 UIT plays a key role in the engineering and implementation of projects for Wismut in the fields of automated monitoring within complex networks, water treatment on the basis of HDS technology, uranium recovery from mine flood water and processing, modeling and simulation of both mine flooding and remediation technologies for process optimization and licensing procedures. In addition to current consulting and engineering activities for Wismut, UIT develops solutions for the proactive remediation of uranium sites for clients world-wide nowadays.
1994 – 1996 Demilitarization Technologies
UIT is engaged by ISL Lübben GmbH as prime contractor for the engineering and construction of an incineration plant for demilitarization purposes (elimination of explosives, ammunition, propellants a. o.).
1998 – 2002 Chernobyl Activities
UIT together with consortium partners from U.S.A., CH, D and UA is engaged in an EBRD-funded project to characterize fuel-containing material within the Chernobyl Shelter and to develop concepts for its recovery and disposal.
Since 1998 Smart Environmental Monitoring
Based on the experience from earlier designs of water monitoring technique, UIT intensifies the development effort (including projects with several research institutes) to develop smart water monitoring technology (robust hydrological monitoring equipment, automated multi-sensor water probes) in combination with state-of-the-art data-communication and networking technology as well as data management systems. Since 2005 UIT has been offering the standardized SENSOweb® – a web server based network technology – for efficient monitoring systems. SENSOweb® integrates UIT’s SENSOlog® probes with measuring modules from partner organizations (hydrological, meteorological, chemical-toxic, radiological a. o.) for customized solutions in the fields of general environmental monitoring, early warning, site surveillance and many others. The groundwater monitoring network in UIT’s hometown Dresden is an excellent reference, with many others in Germany and abroad.
Since 1998 Eco-friendly Mining and Processing
Based on the know-how in the field of remediation in the mining and milling industry, UIT extends its business portfolio with regard to exploration, mining technology and hydrometallurgical processing and contributes to the development of eco-friendly mining technologies in Australia and U.S.A., strictly meeting high safety and environmental standards.
Since 2002 Monitoring Networks and Early-warning Systems
UIT is prime contractor in many EU-funded projects (Phare, TACIS) and other tasks for the design, supply and implementation of complex hydrological and radiological monitoring networks in PL, BG, RO, RU, CZ and others.
Since 2004 Water Technology for Industry and Mining
UIT develops water technology applications in specific and challenging projects in industry (solar, steel, ceramics a. o.), mining (acid mine drainage, heavy-metal contamination a. o.) and remediation (incl. in-situ technologies). UIT offers complete services – from technology development via all engineering stages including construction management. For the test and optimization of treatment technologies in sophisticated application cases, UIT uses its modular, container-based pilot facility that can be used at the relevant sites in a flexible manner. This results in planning reliability, quite often in combination with chemical process simulation by using software tools developed by UIT itself.
Since 2004 Modeling and Software Development
After many years of customized software development for process simulation purposes in mining and industry, UIT starts to develop software tools in application fields like geochemistry, reactive transport models, hydrometallurgy, water treatment, radionuclide transport, (enhanced) natural attenuation (incl. biological processes) a. o. for process simulation purposes in environment and technology. Nowadays such model tools are used for technology development, process optimization, engineering, licensing procedures, and expert reports.
Since 2005 Biotechnology – Bioconversion
On the basis of early-days experience in the field of bio-technological laboratory test facilities for environmental research, UIT expands its portfolio regarding engineering and manufacture of facilities and plants. From 2005 to 2007 UIT as prime contractor has realized a turn-key, industrial-scale pilot plant for the production of highly-pure lactic acid from biomass in close cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering Potsdam-Bornim. UIT develops and manufactures further bioreactor pilot facilities, in particular automated fermenters for biogas generation, for national and international customers.
Since 2008 General Contractor for the Construction of Water Treatment Plants
In addition to the full scope of engineering services in the field of water technology, UIT becomes engaged as general contractor for the construction of industrial and mining water treatment plants and offers turn-key solutions (including plant construction, automation, commissioning and optimization).
Since 2010 Development and Application Centre for Exploration and Mining Technologies
After first development activities in the field of radiological borehole sondes for the exploration of uranium resources in the years 2007-2009, UIT has taken over tasks for the systematic development of methodological preconditions for geophysical surveying (primarily algorithms for the analysis of seismic 2D/3D data in conjunction with results from other exploration methods) as well as for the development of innovative borehole sondes for the integrative measurement of geophysical and geochemical-mineralogical parameters (combination of artificial radiation sources with time-correlated neutron detection and gamma-ray spectroscopy). Accordingly, UIT becomes the development and application center for exploration and mining technologies within the General Atomics group.
Since 2011 Neutron Laboratory fort he Production of Radiologic Borehole Tools
UIT has established a radiological laboratory in compliance with its license according to §11 of StrlSchV (German Radiation Protection Act) and has met all technical requirements for the manufacture and comprehensive test of radiological borehole tools for the geophysical exploration.
Since 2011 Geology Consulting
In relation to the innovation by the development activities for geological-geophysical exploration UIT expands its expertise in consulting focusing on seismic exploration and seismic-stratigraphic correlation, metallogenesis (ore formation) and petrography, and hydrogeology and Geo-Risk Management.
