Regionales Bündnis auf breiter gesellschaftlicher Basis

Das rECOmine-Projekt soll die gewachsenen Kompetenzen im Bereich der Umwelttechnologien innerhalb der Montanregion Erzgebirge weiterentwickeln und zur Erschließung disperser Rohstoffquellen in Verbindung mit der Beseitigung von Umweltlasten nutzen.

An Erprobungs- und Demonstrationsstandorten werden unterschiedliche Umweltproblemstellungen mit automatisierten und modular zusammengesetzten Ressourcentechnologien verbunden. Bestehende Altlasten sollen als Rohstoffquellen begriffen werden. Diese Quellen zu nutzen, den Sanierungsaufwand zu senken und eine neue Form der Rohstoffgewinnung zu etablieren, ist Ziel von rECOmine.

Entwicklungsfelder für innovationsbasierten Strukturwandel im Erzgebirge

Die angedachten Entwicklungsfelder leitet rECOmine aus den drei wichtigsten Reststoffquellen des Bergbaus ab:

  • Schlacken/Aschen
  • Spülhalden
  • Bergbauwässer

Diese Quellen enthalten signifikante Konzentrationen an wirtschaftlich interessanten Rohstoffen und sind weltweit verbreitet. Beispielsweise können Technologien zur Reinigung von Grubenwässern weiterentwickelt werden, um neben den Schadstoffen auch Rohstoffprodukte aus den Abfallströmen zu extrahieren. Toxische Abfälle werden abgetrennt, Rohstoffe gewonnen und als marktfähige Produkte und Dienstleistungen regional und auf dem Weltmarkt angeboten.

Schlüsseltechnologien sind hier u.a. die biologische Laugung, Membrantechnologien, mechanische Verfahrenstechnik, Wasserreinigungstechnik oder das Phytomining. Die Integration aktueller Entwicklungen in IT, Sensortechnologie und Automatisierungstechnik soll eine hohe Wirtschaftlichkeit und weltweite Passfähigkeit der entwickelten Lösungen gewährleisten.

Wirtschaftliches Potential für ein langfristiges Bündnis

Das Erzgebirge bietet eine Reihe von Möglichkeiten, die skizzierten Technologien wirtschaftlich erfolgreich umzusetzen. Die limitierte Verfügbarkeit von Haldenmaterial und die nur begrenzte geologische Attraktivität neuer Lagerstätten setzt der direkten wirtschaftlichen Umsetzung in der Region jedoch Grenzen. Auf längere Sicht sollen deshalb die im regionalen Kontext entwickelten Lösungen am Weltmarkt etabliert werden.

Umwelt- und Ingenieurtechnik GmbH Dresden (UIT) supports students of the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium Dresden within a sponsored run. Every kilometre there, donations were collected, which are now used to purchase more than 500 hectares of rainforest in the region of Tena in Ecuador. This area is now permanently protected. UIT thus makes an active contribution to sustainable environmental protection in this region.

In addition to this project, there were already first activities in Ecuador in 2014. Here, however, the focus was on water - more precisely the measurement of water quality parameters near Cuenca. In Ecuador's third largest city with around 331,000 inhabitants, a pilot measuring station was set up to monitor the water quality of the Tomebamba River. The collected data sets are sent telemetrically to a network center for further evaluation. The multi-parameter probe MSM-S2  and a data logger of the LogTrans series  are used in this pilot project.

UIT was exhibitor on the Symposium "Tag der Hydrologie 2018" - "M³ - Measurement, Modelling, Managen"

Between 21.03.2018 and 23.03.2018 UIT presented selected measurement systems from our range of products.

The symposium gave a global view on the wide spectrum of the german speaking hydrological community to the themes Measurement, Modelling and Management of hydrology and water resources.

What are the biggest challenges for green field/ in and near mine exploration currently and how to solve them? Which highly innovative and cost-effective, non-invasive technologies and services are provided by German companies?

Those and many other questions have been discussed during various sessions and panel discussions at the “German Day” in Toronto at March, 6th 2018. Topics were the challenging adaptation of mining and process models, social license to operate, sustainable exploration practices and multi-element mining to reduce tailings.

Our geologist Micha Zauner represented UIT during the panel discussion about "German Technology to improve the bottom line in the project development". Topics such as 3D modelling of ore deposits and interpretation of exploration data were presented. Another game changing development is UIT´s neutron borehole logging tool “oreLOG” to precisely investigate the underground with integrated lithological and mineralogical logging interpretation.

We are looking forward to next year’s PDAC and new challenging questions.

Between 2013 and 2017, the UIT installed a measurement system of 50 measuring points around the building site of the large Autobahn-Project “Lückenschluss A661-A66 – Kreuzungsbauwerk am Autobahndreieck Erlenbruch” close to Frankfurt. With the installation of remote transmitting data loggers, mostly in groundwater measuring points, an independent groundwater monitoring can be realized with full area coverage. Data can be viewed by the client and the involved engineers via our web service SENSOweb.

Measurement system monitoring:

During the beginning of the project 2013, the first measurement points were equipped with data loggers. In 2017, the monitoring network was expanded with 45 additional measuring points. The data loggers incl. remote transmission are mostly used in

  • Groundwater surveillance, often times under floor measuring points and
  • Surface water surveillance

Additionally, weather stations were equipped.

All measurement points are organized by the web-service SENSOweb:

  • Hourly monitoring and logging of measured data
  • Daily remote transmission  to the web-platform SENSOweb
  • Daily status updates for the project managers
  • Download option of all data for the engineers in charge
 1513613727_4474__20_medium.jpg UIT is collaborating with Prolific Mining in Utah/USA since early 2016. Main objective of the current project in the Bromide Basin is the development of an economic polymetallic mine. The prospect bears the potential of being a new Bingham Canyon deposit, another giant porphyry copper mine. The current metallurgical test work focuses on the epithermal zone of the deposit, mainly bearing Cu, Au and Ag vein mineralization. The 2017 test program resulted in extraordinarily good recoveries and concentrate grades for the payable elements. UIT and partners were able to produce a saleable Cu concentrate of 24 wt% Cu by sulphide flotation. A 90% recovery of Au from the gravity concentrate by iodine-iodide was already reached without any optimization and is currently further investigated.

The 2018 test work will focus on core samples from deep drilling within the porphyry zone in order to develop an adequate process flow diagram for the future mill. Aside the standard payable element suite of Cu, Au and Ag, other high-revenue elements will also be considered as by-products.

The container based BioXtractor - the next generation of pilot plants using biotechnology - has been delivered to our customer BRAIN AG after a design and production period of four months. In this mobile container plant hightech and precious metals can be extracted from supposed waste, such as computer boards or metallurgical slags. Our customer has brought the advantages of the mobile pilot plant to the point.

On 17 August 2017 the regional TV station “Hessenschau” titled under "Gold from scrap" and Hessian broadcasting under "Ashes to Gold".

A groundwater monitoring network with public platform on the internet has been handed over to the Water Management Office Regensburg. The installation of the measuring network has been performed in a very short time period and included the following services:

 

  • Construction, delivery and installation of 56 water level recorders with GPRS data transmission
  • Provision of a public platform http://www.gwm-wwa-r.de/
  • Graphical presentation of the measuring points on a zoomable card
  • Selectable temporal display range for the respective measuring point

The Okavango Delta and Chobe river system belong to a cross-border nature reserve within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The governments of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe have taken on the task to establish an automated monitoring system for water quality parameters and water levels, and thus to improve cooperation between the competent authorities.

Based on this standardized long-term monitoring system all participating countries will get benefit from a predictive model which provides important trends on water quality and fluctuating water levels.

The challenging operational conditions in the project area require a stable working and robust measurement technology. Following a tendering procedure the responsible procurement authority has finally decided for multi-parameter probes of type MSM-S2 and data logger technology of type LogTrans6 both made by Umwelt- und Ingenieurtechnik GmbH Dresden and thereby trusts on long-term proven systems.

On May 27, 2015, many invited guests took the opportunity to be actually informed on UIT and our new hydrometallurgical test center. After an opening ceremony and official speeches, giving an overview on our activities and capabilities in the business field "Mineral Resources" they visited our hydrometallorgical test center as well as UIT's new water technology lab. We thank our guests for their participation and the active exchange of experiences.
